Invasive Species
Last night I rented two interesting movies.
"Cane Toads," which a lot of people at the Exploratorium recommended, is a campy documentary about the large, poisonous toads which were brought to Queensland, Australia to control a sugar cane grub infestation, and what happened when they started breeding... The people of Queensland have a funny love-hate relationship with the toads; some people keep them as pets, while others swerve back and forth across the road to squish as many as possible under their tires.
Also rented "The Barbarian Invasions," a French-Canadian film about a history professor who is dying of cancer. Parts of it are funny, parts touching. His inability to accept his approaching death - his fear of not being - hit a nerve with me.
