When you try to be reasonable and moderate, everyone disagrees with you.

Yep, it's usually a thankless path, but after the dust settles, it's also the one that leads to meaningful results. Look at the position of majority leader in the U.S. Senate. The majority leader's job is to get things done, which requires him to broker reasonable compromises. His reward for being an effective leader is to make enemies on both sides of the aisle, and therefore to watch any future political ambitions he might have fade away. Lyndon Johnson is the only one who managed to do make the jump from majority leader to president, but he's a special case in many ways (for starters, he practically invented the position of majority leader). Anyway, yay for history.

You are one of the most reasonable, thoughtful voices in the edusphere. That's why your blog is one of my favorites, and it's also why many people who shape education policy in this city take you seriously (and I know for a fact that they do). Keep it up.
